Pyvnc2swf is a cross-platform screen recording tool.
The sofware captures screen motion through the VNC protocol and generates a Shockwave Flash (SWF) movie.
Pyvnc2swf suite comes with three separate Python programs:
1) vnc2swf.py – a program captures a VNC sessions and records it in either SWF or VNCLog format. This is a VNC client and communicates directly with a VNC server. A user need to start a VNC server in advance
2) edit.py – Movie editor (This is NOT a general SWF file editor. It only supports movies generated by vnc2swf
3) play.py – Simple movie viewer
Features include:
- Recording:
- Capture VNC sessions and record to either SWF or VNCLog format.
- Encode movies to FLV, SWF5, SWF7 or MPEG formats.
- Record the whole screen.
- Record a specific area by pointing out its dimensions.
- Creates an SWF file and an HTML file with the SWF embedded and looping endlessly.
- Captures via VNC and will therefore capture any desktop that you can connect to via VNC. It can therefore capture a GNOME, KDE, Xfce etc desktop.
- Use it to screencast Compiz.
- Movie editor – for editing or reorganizing one or multiple movies generated by vnc2swf.py:
- Supports converting a .vnc file into .swf movie.

- Simple movie viewer for SWF or VNC files.
