Tiling Window Managers

Notion – tiling, tabbed window manager

Notion is a tiling, tabbed window manager for the X window system. It divides your screen into tiles which can be stacked, rearranged, split into sizes etc.

The program is traditionally written to be very usable by mainly using the keyboard but it’s possible to use a mixture of keyboard and mouse.

Notion was originally a fork of Ion. It primarily targets Linux.

Key Features

  • Workspaces: each workspace has its own tiling.
  • Multihead: the mod_xinerama plugin provides dual-monitor support.
  • RandR: mod_xrandr picks up changes in the multihead configuration, without the need for restarting Notion.
  • Supports powerful extension by Lua scripting.
