IFStile – Iterated Function Systems – visualize substitution tilings

Last Updated on April 4, 2021

Summary

If you want an introduction to IFS fractals, give IFStile a whirl. Create your own IFS fractals with this useful tool.

IFStile can be helpful for research in discrete geometry, algebraic number theory, dynamical systems, and theoretical computer science. The package considers self-affine tilings as a particular perfect case of self-affine fractals, and is therefore relevant for fractal geometry.

The software is not released under an open source license.

Sadly the software’s documentation is rather woeful. There’s no on-line help, the Help menu option simply shows an About box. And the project’s website proclaims a user manual. You’re offered a thesis titled “An algebraic framework for finding and analyzing self-affine tiles and fractals” which contains only a brief manual in its final chapter.
