There’s a vast array of free and open-source music software available on the Linux platform, offering both maturity and sophistication. Linux boasts numerous music tools that provide enhanced functionality and seamless integration with various internet music services. With most desktop environments equipped with multiple audio players, alongside cross-platform applications and integrated media players, you’ll find yourself spoiled for choice when it comes to music players.
Every music library is unique, and selecting the right open-source music player can truly elevate your listening experience, especially if you have a large collection.
daph is a terminal-based music player for Linux. It’s written in the popular Rust language and published under an open source license.
Installation
I evaluated daph with the Manjaro distribution but it’s easy to build the program so it’s accessible whatever Linux distribution floats your boat.

Generally speaking building Rust programs is easy. That’s a big plus for the end user. If only I could say the same about Python programs.
Installation is a breeze with the AUR package installing with no issues.
In Operation
Here’s a couple of images with daph playing music. The first shows a constrained window where only the main pane is displayed.

Widening the terminal shows the full TUI.

Features include:
- Supports FLAC, MP3, and WAV audio files. I’ve only testedf FLAC and MP3.
- Basic search functionality.
Summary
daph looks a promising music player but it’s far too basic in its current form. Some of the functionality is not intuitive, particularly the playback order. And some of the existing functionality is not working such as seeking.
There are lots of features I’d like adding. Some of them such as queue management and lyrics support look like they are planned.
Linux has a great range of terminal-based music players. My personal preferences are musikcube and tap, but this roundup offers a wide selection.
Thanks for a user’s suggestion to take a look at daph. It had not come up on my radar.
