ZenLake OS – remix of Debian or Ubuntu LTS

ZenLake OS is a remix of Debian or Ubuntu LTS with GNOME desktop.

ZenLake aims to fix this by making GNOME more user-friendly. It provides a familiar, Windows-like layout with a taskbar at the bottom of the screen. The goal is to offer a lightweight and minimal GNOME desktop that’s ready to use right away, without needing to install and configure several extensions. The minimal ISO is less than 2 GB, allowing you to install only the software you need after the system is set up.

ZenLake also includes built-in system restore functionality, so you can easily revert your system to a previous state if something goes wrong.

Features include:

  • Based on Debian or Ubuntu.
  • GNOME desktop with Windows-like layout.
  • Minimal ISO under 2 GiB in size.
  • Support for Snap and Flatpak without pre-installed apps.
  • Support for running in VirtualBox, VMware, and KVM virtual machines.
  • Latest Firefox version from Mozilla’s official repository.
  • Calamares Installer.
  • System restore functionality.
  • Cloudflare DNS for faster DNS lookups.
  • SSH multiplexing for faster SSH connections.
  • Boot menu option to run Live session from RAM.

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")?

A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system.

Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies.

Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros.
