MaxOr OS is a Debian Linux–based distribution designed to provide a highly optimized, performance-focused desktop experience with a strong emphasis on gaming and modern hardware support.
It aims to deliver a streamlined system with sensible defaults, preconfigured optimizations, and a curated selection of software to reduce post-install setup time.
Key Features
- Local AI with Ollama – integrates local AI capabilities using Ollama. Large language models such as Llama 3.1, Mistral, and Phi-3 run entirely on the user’s machine. No cloud services, subscriptions, or external APIs are required. The system provides a multilingual intelligent assistant while keeping all data processed locally.
- Privacy Hardened – security and privacy are central design principles. The system enforces AppArmor profiles, enables the UFW firewall by default, removes APT telemetry, disables unnecessary NetworkManager connectivity checks, and protects against automatic USB device mounting. The result is a hardened environment with minimal background data exposure.
- Four Native Languages – the system ships with full support for Romanian, Hungarian, German, and English from first boot. Spellchecking, dictionaries, and keyboard layouts are pre-configured. Users can switch keyboard layouts instantly using Alt+Shift.
- European Governance and Licensing – licensed under the EUPL-1.2, the distribution emphasizes GDPR-aligned data practices and eIDAS awareness. It is built on Debian and governed by a European foundation, reflecting its regional focus and regulatory alignment.
- GNOME and Flatpak Ecosystem – the desktop environment is GNOME running on Wayland. Application delivery is centered around Flatpak with Flathub enabled. Core applications include Firefox ESR, LibreOffice, and Timeshift. The default visual theme combines a dark interface with gold accents.
- Calamares Installer – designed for simplicity and speed. The process typically takes around 10 minutes. Both UEFI and legacy BIOS systems are supported. A live ISO environment allows users to test the system before installation.

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")? |
| A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system. Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies. Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros. |
