The Ultimate Linux Newbie eBook Edition

Ultimate Linux Newbie Guide eBook

Let’s kick off with a good introduction to Linux. The Ultimate Linux Newbie eBook Edition is aimed at both beginners and veteran computer users alike. It seeks to help you choose, install, and use Linux. It’s particularly good at demystifying the Linux jargon.

Chapters cover:

  • What is Linux – this chapter explains what’s an operating system, what is UNIX, and how Linux differs from UNIX.
  • Why Linux – What are the Benefits?
  • Choosing a Linux Distribution – discusses distributions including live distributions and offers a few handy links to places where you can find out information about others.
  • Preparing to Install Linux – deals with determining what you need to do to prepare for installation of Linux, including ensuring all your hardware will work with Linux. It also covers how different distributions work with package management.
  • Installing Linux (Ubuntu) – offers a complete step-by-step guide to installing Ubuntu, a popular Linux distribution.
  • How do I get software for Linux? – explains how software is distributed, dependencies, using binary packages, and obtaining software that comes with the distribution.
  • How do I install software? – covers installing .RPM, .DEB packages and tar.gz files. It shows the reader how to install software with the Synaptic Package Manager, and using apt-get and yum at the command line.
  • Using Linux Every Day – find out how to do all the things you want to do with your computer. From listening to music, watching TV, using office software and even playing games, this chapter covers all the standard desktop uses of a home or small office PC.

The book then moves on to a selection of tips. The author’s website offers many more tips.

  • How to put a Linux ISO onto a USB stick and make it bootable on a Mac.
  • How to mount a USB stick as a non-root user with write permission.
  • Convert images at the command line with ImageMagick.
  • What is X, XFree, XOrg, or X Windows?
