Embroiderly – cross-platform desktop application for designing cross-stitch patterns

Embroiderly is a cross-platform desktop application designed for creating and editing cross-stitch patterns. It provides a dedicated environment for designing embroidery layouts digitally, allowing users to plan patterns before stitching them in the physical world.

The software focuses on usability and portability, offering a native desktop experience across operating systems while supporting common embroidery workflows.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Focused pattern design workflow tailored specifically for cross-stitch projects.
  • Palette and symbols management.
  • Image import.
  • Drawing tools – supports eight types of stitches, organized into groups. Each group contains related stitch variants that you can quickly switch between.
  • PDF export.
  • Supports multiple file formats:
    • EMBPROJ: The native Embroiderly format. EMBPROJ is a regular ZIP archive containing the pattern file in the OXS format along with other files for the internal usage. While fully supported in Embroiderly, this format is not designed for interchanging with other applications.
    • OXS: An open XML-based format created by UrsaSoftware as a universal interchange format in the embroidery world. Embroiderly provides full read and write support for OXS, making it ideal for sharing patterns with other embroidery software and people.
    • XSD: A proprietary format of Pattern Maker for Cross Stitch. Embroiderly can open and read XSD files, allowing you to import existing patterns from Pattern Maker, though it doesn’t support saving to this format.
  • Advanced shortcuts system.
  • Cross-platform support, enabling use on Linux, Windows, and other systems.
