OpenBSD – multi-platform BSD-based UNIX-like operating system

The OpenBSD project produces a free, multi-platform 4.4BSD-based UNIX-like operating system.

The project focuses on portability, standardization, correctness, proactive security and integrated cryptography. As an example of the effect OpenBSD has, the popular OpenSSH software comes from OpenBSD.

The project makes the following claims:

  • Runs on many different hardware platforms.
  • Thought of as the most secure UNIX-like operating system by many security professionals, as a result of the never-ending comprehensive source code audit.
  • Full-featured UNIX-like operating system available in source and binary form at no charge.
  • Integrates cutting-edge security technology suitable for building firewalls and private network services in a distributed environment.
  • Benefits from strong ongoing development in many areas, offering opportunities to work with emerging technologies and an international community of developers and end users.
  • Attempts to minimize the need for customization and tweaking. For the vast majority of users, OpenBSD just works on their hardware for their application.

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")?

A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system.

Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies.

Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros.
