Kali Linux – penetration testing distribution

Kali Linux is an advanced penetration testing distribution which provides useful and relevant features for security professionals. It does this by providing common tools, configurations, and automations which allows the user to focus on the task that needs to be completed, not the surrounding activity.

Kali Linux is heavily integrated with live-build, allowing endless flexibility in customizing and tailoring every aspect of your Kali Linux ISO images.

Features include:

  • More than 600 penetration testing tools are included.
  • Kali adheres to the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard, allowing Linux users to easily locate binaries, support files, libraries, etc.
  • LUKS nuke option, allowing you to quickly control the destruction of data.
  • Wide-ranging wireless device support.
  • Custom kernel, patched for injection: As penetration testers, the development team often needs to do wireless assessments, so Kali’s kernel has the latest injection patches included.
  • GPG signed packages and repositories.
  • Kali Undercover – a set of scripts that change the theme of your Kali Linux to a Windows 10 alike theme.
  • Win-KeX provides a GUI desktop experience for Kali Linux in Windows Subsystem for Linux.

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")?

A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system.

Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies.

Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros.
