HP ProBook 440 G8 Laptop running Linux: Introduction to the Series

Condition of Refurbished Laptop

The website says the condition is “Grade B few light scratches on lid” but the more information section says “Refurbished – Grade A”.

Let’s briefly go through the condition of the key components:

Display

Refurbished laptops can have issues with the display. Common faults include pressure spots and/or dead pixels. Permanent pressure spots on a laptop screen are often caused by closing the lid too hard, placing heavy objects on the laptop, dropping it, or pressing too hard on the screen.

My display is 14.0″ full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS. I’m pleased to report that the condition of the display I received is literally pristine. There are no pressure spots and not a single dead pixel.

Keyboard and trackpad

The spill resistant keyboard and clickpad with multi-touch gesture support are both in excellent condition.

Chassis

Overall, the condition is very good. There is a small ding in the lid probably caused by compression in a poorly padded rucksack. Fortunately, this has not caused any damage to the display itself. The hinges look fine.

Battery

This can be a common downfall of refurbished laptops, as it can be bit of a lottery when it comes to the condition of the battery. And replacing a laptop battery isn’t trivial for some people especially given that laptops with removable batteries are a thing of the past and the number of fake batteries being sold. If only ThinkPads had retained their removable battery; I just loved having two batteries in a laptop.

My internal 3-cell 45Wh battery has gone through 127 charge cycles, which is much lower than I expected. I shouldn’t need to replace the battery for a few years at least.

Battery cycle

Overall, the laptop is in excellent condition.

I’ll dive into the specifications of the laptop in more detail in the next article in this series.

I have a Probook 445 G10 brand new in 2024 running Debian out of the box with no issues. So yours should do the same.
