Low-Spec Hardware? Try these Desktop Environments
I have selected my pick of desktop environments that are excellent candidates for older hardware. They typically run well on low-spec machines, even a system with a Pentium II 266MHz CPU, a processor that is now 16 years old. All of the desktops are released under freely distributable licenses. If your Linux box feels sluggish in general use, try one of the desktops featured below. It may just save you from discarding a perfectly good machine.

RuneScape
RuneScape is a MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game). In RuneScape you can go exploring, or earn a living practising a craft such as cooking or crafting. Many of the characters in the game can give you quests to explore, each with different rewards. Read more

    aa2map (ASCII art 2 map) is a tool to parse ASCII art into a Quake III: Arena (id Tech 3) map file. Everyone who can operate a keyboard can use this to create custom maps for id Tech 3 based games.

  • comisat Games Collection
    comisat Games Collection is an all-in-one free collection of games written in gambas. Actually, there's four games included: Mr.Cappio (hangman), Mr.Quattro (connect 4), Mr.Biscia (snake) and Mr.Mind (master mind).
  • deal
    This program is a calculator for card-draw probabilities. Specifically it computes non-replacement draw probabilities using the hypergeometric function. It can also be used to compute binomial coefficients and the gamma function.
  • dicelab
    dicelab allows you to express complex dice rolling schemes in a functional language and then roll dice according to such a scheme or analyze the statistic distribution of values. This is useful when designing games (and to some degree when playing them).
  • Diplojuge
    Diplojuge is a project which should make it possible to automate all the actions of a judge of Diplomacy.
  • Dosbox-pykde
    Dosbox-pykde is a frontend for dosbox for the KDE desktop. It is similar to other frontends for dosbox. The major difference with this one is that it is centered around file management. This frontend is designed to separate the freshly installed files from the changed file, configuration files, and saved games.
  • Dpmaster
    Dpmaster is a lightweight master server initially written for the DarkPlaces game engine. Its Quake III Arena-like protocol allows it to fully support new games without having to restart or reconfigure it.
  • dpygames
    dpygames consists of a few terminal games which use the dpy library.
  • dtcltiny
    dtcltiny is a small SRCP client using SRCP protocol version 0.8.
  • Foks
    Foks is a KiSS viewer for linux. KiSS is a computer version of paperdolls. Foks support FKiSS 1, 2, 2.1 and 3 extensions.
  • Freevial
    Freevial is a platform for trivia-like games, designed to be used on community events where ideally a projector and loudspeakers would be available.
  • galng.tcl
    galng.tcl is a report viewer/tool for galaxy pbem game, primary for NG variant. It is written entirely in Tcl/Tk 8.0.
  • gbxgol
    gbxgol is a small program for the Italian betting game, Totogol.
  • Gdado
    Gdado is a very simple application for rolling dices. It is intended for use in role playing games. It is written in C using GTK.
  • GFSGL
    Golden Files Software Game Launcher: a program which will help you install, manage and run games on Linux and other unix-like systems. It can run both native games and emulated games (using programs such as wine/winex). It has a console and a X11 UI.
  • Glulx
    Glulx is a portable VM, like the Z-machine. Unlike the Z-machine, it uses 32-bit data and addresses, so it can handle game files up to four gigabytes long.
  • Glulxe
    Glulxe is an interpreted implementation of the Glulx portable Interactive Fiction VM, like the Z-machine but using the Glk API.
  • GnomeKiss
    GnomeKiSS is an implementation of French-KiSS for the GNOME desktop environment, using GNOME, GTK+ and the X Window System. French KiSS is an enhanced KiSS/GS for scriptable dolls, where KiSS is an abbreviation for Kisekae Set System (or something).
  • Half-life Admin MOD
    Half-life Admin MOD is a plugin mod for halflife that works with most other mods and provides a high grainularity of user access to rcon commands.
  • Imptalk
    Imptalk is real time communication software built to provide face-to-face advantages to remote gamers.
  • JukQuiz
    A quiz game designed to test the knowledge of your music collection. JukQuiz will play a random song (that is in Juk's collection) and present you with a number of song title to guess from. It gives you around ten seconds to try to guess the song, disabling incorrect options as the seconds go by.
  • Key Scripter
    Key Scripter listens to key press/release events from a keyboard device and sends fake key events to an X display. It supports gaming keypads such as the Wolfking Warrior or Nostromo SpeedPad and allows the creation and usage of complicated key scripts for games and other applications.

  • LaDa
    LaDa is a GPL-ed tool that makes easier to play on a non-electric dart table.
  • Linux-Wildo
    Linux-Wildo is a project to build a platform independent replacement for Roger Wilco (not the janitor), a voice chat program for gamers with a client and server model.
  • LongoMatch
    LongoMatch is a sports video analysis tool for coaches and sports scientists, to assist them on making games video analysis. It simplifies video analysis by providing a set of intuitive tools to tag, review and edit the most importants plays of the game
  • Lutris
    Lutris is an interface to manage and launch video games on Linux systems. It is a configuration tool that also provides a way to stock online and share game saves and settings.
  • MakePAK
    MakePAK is a command-line tool for the creation of Quake .PAK files.
  • mpq-tools
    mpq-tools is a set of utilities for manipulating MPQ (MoPaQ) archives, which are used by Blizzard in most of their games (e.g., Diablo, Diablo 2, StarCraft, and WarCraft 3). It can extract, move, delete and create archives. It comes with libmpq, which is a library for developers to add MPQ handling to their applications.
  • mudsbuilder
    mudsbuilder is a set of tools for the creation of dungeon maps in MUDs. Once a map is created, the user has the ability to generate LPC code from that map for virtually any mudlib.
  • Mumble
    Mumble is low-latency, high quality voice chat software primarily intended for use while gaming. It should compile and run the client out of the box on at least Ubuntu 6.06, and quite likely other distributions as well.
  • Normal/Displacement Map Generator
    Normal/Displacement Map Generator allows you to create normal maps for the use in game applications or 3D editors like Blender3D. It supports the generation of geometry normal maps (from hi-res meshes), displacement maps, and merging detail maps.
  • OpenUHS
    OpenUHS is a reader for Universal Hint System files. Universal Hint System is a game assistant that gradually reveals hints and images in a non-linear, FAQ-like manner rather than spoiling everything as a walkthrough would. Over 500 games are known to the UHS repository.

    PySoy is a cross-platform Python module which enables developers to easily build custom Python-based 3D games.
  • QGSpider
    Most games store their values for money, energy, lives etc. in memory while they are running. QGSpider gives you the power to search for memory addresses of those values, and the possibility to modify or lock the values to whatever you want!

    qscore is a tool to parse Quake 3: Arena (and compatible) server logs into high scores and statistics.
  • Razer device configuration tool
    Razercfg is a next generation Razer device configuration tool. It is intended to replace the old deathaddercfg utility. It includes a device HAL library, a Python razer HAL module, a command line tool, and a graphical Qt tool to configure the devices.
  • RejoysTick
    RejoysTick is a program that maps keypresses on your gamepad/joypad/joystick to keypresses on a keyboard when you are running X.
  • Rolisteam
    Rolisteam helps you to manage a role playing game with remote friends/players. It provides many features to share maps, pictures and it also includes tool to communicate with you friends/players.
  • roll
    This command-line based program rolls a user-defined dice sequence and displays the result. The dices to roll are defined using dN where N is the number of sides.
  • rq4gen
    rq4gen is a tool for generate player characters for the, never published, role-playing game RuneQuest4.
  • Rush Hour Puzzle Solver
    A C++ program that reads a Rush Hour board from a text file, solves it, and produces a nice PostScript file that shows the shortest solution.
  • Saulot
    Saulot generates NPC Characters for White Wolfs Vampire - the Masquerade und Vampire - the Dark Ages.
  • silverflux
    silverflux is a game management system for GNU/Linux. silverflux automagically installs, downloads patches, and configures games without any required user intervention.
  • SLiteChat
    SLiteChat is an in-world text-only local chat/instant messaging client for Second Life. Features include friends list management (accept/reject friending requests), local chat, and instant messages.
