Raspberry Pi 4 - Photo Viewing

Raspberry Pi 4: Chronicling the Desktop Experience – Viewing Photos – Week 23

Last Updated on August 20, 2020

Compile and install gThumb

gThumb has some mandatory dependencies: glib >= 2.38.0, gtk >= 3.16, libpng, zlib, libjpeg, gsettings-desktop-schemas. There’s many other optional libraries required.

The first line of code installs the packages my system needed (yours may vary, depending on what’s already install on a system). I didn’t want video support, so didn’t install a few of the optional packages.

$ sudo apt install meson gtk+-3.0-dev gsettings-desktop-schemas-dev exiv libexiv2-dev libclutter-1.0 libclutter-gtk-1.0 gstreamer-1.0 liblcms2-dev libcolord-dev libraw-dev libwebp-dev librsvg2-dev bison flex python3-libxml2

Next, we clone the project’s repository, and use meson and ninja to configure, compile and install the software.

$ git clone https://github.com/GNOME/gthumb.git
$ meson build
$ ninja -C build
$ sudo ninja -C build install

Meson is an open source build system. Ninja is a small build system which is designed to replace make.

Here’s the About box of gThumb showing we’re now running the latest version.
