I'm quite to Ubuntu (and Linux) so please be gentle!

I've setup some users on my machine and also created some folders to share.

My first problem is that I set up the folders as root, so with my normal (non root) login I cannot do anything with the folders. So I tried removing them as root ( rm -r/opt/foldername) but the response is the folder doesn't exist - But it does as I can see it through the GUI.

My second problem (which may have some bearing on my first problem) is that I have set up the users as a group and I'd like to set permissions on some folders so that they can access it.
However I fear that I may have removed all rights to these folders (maybe why I have the first problem).

So I suppose my solution should be to create some new folders and start again (unless I can regain control of the other folders somehow)?
Could someone please suggest how I sort this mess out please?
