In November, Asus will ship a $400 Windows-based "nettop" that includes an integrated touchscreen and Linux-based "Express Gate" quick boot technology. The "Eee Top" reportedly has a 15-inch display, 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and a gigabit Ethernet port.

Linux will be a passenger in every seat on Qantas’ Airbus A380s aeroplanes. All of the airline’s superjumbos – the first of which will commence flying next week – will have their in flight entertainment systems powered by the operating system.

Intel CEO Paul Otellini (pictured) reportedly told the Associated Press that Linux will dominate sales of mobile Internet devices (MIDs). Meanwhile, ABI Research predicts that by 2013, Linux will outsell Windows by two to one in the combined market for MIDs, netbooks, and UMPCs.

BenQ and Italian mobile carrier TIM announced the availability of a MID with both WiFi and HSDPA mobile networking. Running Red Flag's Midinux Linux distro, the BenQ S6 Mobile Internet Device (MID) is equipped with an 800MHz Intel Atom processor and 4.8-inch WVGA touchscreen.

Minsk, Belarus-based Promwad Innovation Company says it used uClinux to create a digital video recorder (DVR) prototype. Based on an Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) Blackfin BF533 DSP (digital signal processor), the "JPEG2000 DVR" prototype encodes images in the Motion JPEG2000 format.

Avalue Technlogy has announced a pair of fanless touchpanel computers that run Linux. The 10.4-inch LPC-1001 and 12.1-inch LPC-1201 have Via Eden processors, CompactFlash storage, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, VGA outputs, and optional 2.5-inch hard disk drives, says Avalue.

Based on an RMI Alchemy Au1250 processor, and running on a claimed 3 to 3.5-Watts of power, the Xtreme PC LX offers onboard multimedia acceleration, domain authentication, and Active-Directory-based management, says the company.
