Brazilian independent software vendor (ISV) Handcase says it is porting about 100 of its PalmOS applications to the Linux-based WebOS platform set to debut in Palm's forthcoming Pre smartphone. Handcase is also translating some 323 of its PalmOS apps from Portuguese to English, it says.

Technology blog site TechCrunch has prototyped a WiFi-enabled tablet PC device that runs Linux. The "Crunchpad" is equipped with a Via Nano processor, 1GB RAM, 4GB flash, and a 12-inch, 1024x768 touchscreen, and appears to be aimed at Web-curious couch potatoes.

Last week at CES, Chumby demonstrated a WiFi-enabled digital photo frame (DPF) hardware-software reference design developed with Marvell Semiconductor. The reference design combines Marvell's recently announced PXA168 system-on-chip and 802.11 b/g WiFi chipset with Chumby's Linux-based "push" info-tainment stack and website.

Movial has joined the Khronos Group, and released an interesting "media engine" under the LGPL. The "Movial Octopus Media Engine" targets Linux devices such as MIDs and netbooks equipped with players, voice/video call applications, and other media applications.

Tilera is shipping a 36-core version of its 64-core Tile64 SoC (system-on-chip). Aimed at graphics-intensive embedded applications and networking devices, the TilePro36 clocks from 600MHz to 900MHz, consumes 9-13 Watts (typical), and runs Linux on each, some, or all cores.

Kontron announced a 6U CompactPCI (CPCI) board for "price-sensitive" automation and IP switching applications. The CP6001-V has a 1.86GHz Intel Celeron M440, up to 4GB of RAM, four gigabit Ethernet interfaces, 2.5-inch hard disk support, CompactFlash, and a PMC (PCI mezzanine card) expansion site, says Kontron.

Texas Instruments (TI) is shipping a third-generation "Aureus" digital audio processor platform with a Linux software developer's kit (SDK). Available with an evaluation module (EVM) from Spectrum Digital, the DA830 and DA828 system-on-chips (SoCs) combine an ARM9 core with a digital signal processor (DSP).

HP and Novell today jointly announced that HP will pre-load Novell's SUSE LInux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) on its Compaq dc5850 desktop PC for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Additionally, Novell announced it will maintain a repository of educational software for SLED users, including dc5850 buyers.

With the rise of new, ultra-small netbook computers, Linux has a chance to make its case to consumers. Windows Vista usually won't fit on netbooks, XP already has one foot in the grave, and many netbook buyers may give Linux serious consideration when choosing what OS they want pre-installed. Microsoft says Windows 7 will target netbooks, but until that OS is released, the ball's in Linux's court.
