India-based E-con Systems has announced a Marvell PXA270-based system on module (SOM) that sells for as little as $75. The SODIMM-sized eSOM270 comes pre-installed with Linux, includes 64MB or 128MB of RAM, and has a camera interface and a LCD controller, E-con says.

COMING CLOSE to the original specs Asus officially confirmed to The INQ some weeks back, although now with an ever-so slightly different name change, the Eee Box is doubly-officially announced for the UK. Only this time around it pitches up installed with Microsoft Windows XP Home and not Linux first off, as seen in previous form.

There’s still no official announcement, but an ASUS PR rep has revealed pricing for the Eee PC 901, 1000 and 1000H in the US. We now know that the 901 will come in at $599, the 1000 at $699, and the 1000H at $649. Aside from the 1000H, they’ll be available with Linux or Windows XP installed.

IBM announced the completion of a one-petaflop supercomputer that runs Red Hat Linux. Twice as fast as the previous record-setter, the IBM Blue Gene, the Roadrunner uses a hybrid design that combines 6,948 dual-core AMD Opteron chips with 12,960 Cell processor engines.

So maybe Rahul Sood’s cutting of a birthday cake with a Macbook Air wasn’t really a stunt after all. In Berlin today, HP has announced a new line of ultra-thin notebooks that are actually thinner and more powerful than Apple’s Air. The Voodoo Envy 133 is .7 inches thick and weighs less than 3.4 pounds. Notably it comes with an "instant-on" Linux variant and a power brick that doubles as a Wi-Fi router.
