Linux thin client specialist Igel has created a Linux operating system image for a rugged panel PC designed for vehicle-mounted and industrial applications. The Igel-5310 LX Premium Image works with Glacier's Everest PC (pictured), available with a 600 MHz Celeron or 1.4GHz Pentium M processor.

China Unicom is distributing a Samsung Electronics phone that runs a mobile Linux stack from Mizi Research, a company that will soon be acquired by Wind River. Samsung's "Olympics" phone, also called the SCH-i859, is equipped with a Marvell PXA300 processor and a 2.8-inch touchscreen.

Japanese manufacturer Shimafuji is readying a two-inch cubed computer that runs Red Hat Linux on 1GB of flash. The Space Cube is equipped with a MIPS-based NEC VR5701 processor, 64MB RAM, and numerous I/O connections, including a Firewire-like "SpaceWire" port designed for spaceflight.

A Gartner study estimates 5.2 million mini-notebooks will ship this year, rising to 8 million units in 2009. Gartner pegs Linux and Windows XP as the two dominant operating systems (OSes) in the segment, which could hit 50 million shipments annually by 2012, says Gartner.
