Novell dishes up OpenSUSE 11.1 details Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

The next big release of Novell’s community-driven SUSE Linux distro is set to land on Thursday. Ahead of that, the firm has released details about what customers can expect from version 11.1, including a new licence in which the EULA has been ditched.

I am frequently asked by family and friends why there are so many Linux distributions, and how one should go about making an informed choice between them. I will not attempt to comment on the first question, other than to say that it is because it can be done, and that is one of the things that makes Linux so wonderful. The second question, though, got me thinking about the breadth of Linux distributions, and that is something worth discussing.

HP announced a netbook with a proprietary, media-centric Linux distribution called MIE (Mobile Internet Experience). The HP Mini 1000 features an 8.9-inch or 10.2-inch display, a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, plus a 60GB hard drive or SSD (solid state disk) up to 16GB, says HP.

Debian Lenny was originally scheduled for release in September. Now that we're well into October, Debian developer Alexander Reichle-Schmehl admits that plan was "too optimistic." Although there are still over 200 release-critical bugs still waiting to be patched, if the Debian community is willing to step up, Lenny can see the light of day sooner rather than later.
