In this globally troubled time open source software - and Linux, its operating system poster child - has clear economic advantages. You've heard talk of Joe the Plumber; let me introduce his little known cousin Cain the CIO who’s looking to do more with less money.

Joe the Plumber was a fictional character brought up in the recent US Presidential election campaign, designed to represent regular American workers. What’s not as well known is that Joe has a cousin, Cain the Chief Information Officer.

Cain is my little work of fiction, but do allow him to represent the modern IT team leader, currently besieged with budget cuts, spending freezes and team member redundancies.
