Linux gains backup utility

Memopal announced a free trial download of a Linux version of its online backup utility. The public beta of Memopal supports Ubuntu 8.04 and Debian Etch, says the company, which says it may release an open source version in the future.

Memopal offers "automatic and continuous" backup to a remote server via a secure internet connection, says the company. Its Memopal Global File System (MGFS) archiving technology is said to offer a distributed file system that supports up to 100 million terabytes of online storage, hot-add scalability, and transparent read-write compression, among other features. MGFS is said to improve compression by exploiting "similarities between user data."
