Review: Mac Mini Versus Everex MyMini PC

Last week Everex called its diminutive desktop offering the gPC Mini. Then recently, the Linux distribution it shipped with was updated and took on a form suspiciously similar to an OS utilized by a plucky start-up from Cupertino. We grabbed one of these boxes (re-dubbed the MyMini PC by Everex) plus a newly retooled Mac Mini and took a hard look at the two. It’s true; the carpet and the curtains don’t quite match. Mac Mini

For the desktop experience in a bite-sized form factor, Apple hit the refresh button on the Mac Mini. Leopard practically purrs on the 2-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 1 GB of RAM. Though you won’t be gaming much on the 64-MB Intel GMA 950 processor, it’s a Mac so you won’t be gaming much on it anyway. There’s the slot-loading SuperDrive for all of your ripping and burning needs, and a 120 GB hard drive tucked into the 3 pound, 2-inch x 6.5-inch x 6.5-inch case. Stash it in a nook and use the included remote to control your media from the comfort of your La-Z-Boy command chair. And you're getting Leopard fixins right out of the box too, with included Time Machine and iLife software.
