Novell has released the first beta of Groupwise 7.
Novell has released the first public beta of the next version of its GroupWise messaging platform and said it would include a free version of its Linux Enterprise Server when the software ships in several months time. GroupWise 7, which was code-named Sequoia, is the first of three releases of GroupWise slated over the next three years that will include a host of makeovers and upgrades such as interface enhancements, new collaborative features, expanded back-up capabilities, and cross-platform support. New in version 7.0 are upgrades to the GroupWise client version that runs on Windows, including features that allow users to create multiple calendars.
Novell also has created what it calls a "home" view where users can have separate panes in the interface to show unread items, inbox, check lists, calendars, folders and contacts. Items from each pane can be dragged and dropped into other panes. Also new is a fast-navigation bar, a customizable toolbar that allows users to switch between views in the client, say from the in-box to the calendar.
Novell also has integrated presence awareness through its GroupWise Instant Messenger server and added an upgrade to its Web access client to mimic the interface of the GroupWise for Windows client.
