OpenZaurus Getting Started Guide

Here's a tutorial on installing Linux on a Zaurus PDA.

If you're like me you've had a Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 for a number of years and have yearned for a better operating system and applications for this great little PDA (or Personal Mobil Tool as it refers to itself).

I went from the default Sharp ROM thru each of the beta releases of the The Kompany ROMs as they were introduced. I finally stuck with the final release of version one. The reason I switched to TKC.ROM is because I purchased a number of their commercial PIM applications. The Kompany quickly became frustrated trying to keep up to date with all the different Sharp ROMs (and Zaurus models) that were starting to spread as well as all the different libraries that needed to be installed in order for their ever increasing number of applications to work properly. Finally the decision was made to create their own ROM whereby they could control the list of applications that came pre-installed and also control which libraries were pre-installed, thus guaranteeing that their applications would work and look as expected. All the while a small group of talented open source developers started working on the OpenZaurus and Opie projects, techy alternatives for the bleeding-edge crowd that really wanted to push their Zaurus to the extreme. I had always kept a close eye on the development of OpenZaurus but never installed it because I had always considered it a work in progress and to unstable to be used in "everyday use" (not to mention its inability to run the TKC applications which I had already invested in).

Of course this all changed recently when I popped by the OpenZaurus.org site and had a look at their latest efforts. I was pleased to find that they had recently released version 3.5.2, I was also astounded by the fact that this one Linux distribution could be run across all the different Zaurus models to date (I've lost count a long time ago). This is of course astonishing because different Zaurus models have entirely hardware specifications, different displays, some tall and thin, others are clamshell-like and short and wide.
