Customizing Ubuntu - Part I

Tuxme.com teaches us how to customize Ubuntu in part 1 of this series.

So just after Christmas while I had some time off I decided to give Ubuntu a try. I already had Windows XP and Suse 9.1 Personal installed on this computer, but who could resist a distribution called "Warty Warthog"? Besides, I've always wanted a native Gnome distribution and a system optimized for using apt as a software packager. During one long snowy night in Canada I kept notes throughout the entire process. This is part 1 of 3.

Installation
It had been well over a month since I ordered 10 free CDs of Ubuntu and I have yet to receive any. But being impatient I just decided to download the ISO myself. At first sight I'm not terribly impressed with the installation interface. Yes it is very straight forward but it also reminds me of the old Red Hat 5 installs. Unless you allow Ubuntu to just erase the entire hard drive and set up its own partition structure, the partition manager is definitely not very user friendly. It's not obvious what you are supposed to do to designate your root and swap partitions and you have to have some computer knowledge to not accidentally overwrite an existing OS. Towards the end of the installation it copies some packages from the CD to the hard drive and reboots. When the system comes back up I am asked whether I want to connect to the Internet and download new packages for installation. While this process takes a little longer it is definitely recommended and the power of apt is beginning to show itself. I take a 20 minute break and return to answer a few questions regarding my hardware setup, mainly my preferred video resolution and username.
Soon thereafter the installation is done and I can log in to Gnome.
