WINE and BlitzIn HOWTO
[BlitzIn is the name of the most popular chess interface for the Internet Chess Club]
[WINE is a program that allows you to run windows programs under Linux, and UNIX machines]
Installation of WINE
To get wine, you need to (1) "ftp" it to your machine, (2) compile the source to produce a wine executable.
Download WINE from tsx-11.mit.edu or
sunsite.unc.edu
To unpack and compile the wine distribution, Wine-980104.tar.gz (or whatever filename the latest has), type these commands at the UNIX shell
- gzip -cd < Wine-*.tar.gz | tar -xvf -
- cd wine*
- ./configure
- make depend
- make
This will build the library "libwine.a" and the program "wine". (See the README for more information)
Setting up WINE
Install the wine executable in /usr/local/bin/ by logging into the root account and typing
To reflect your local configuration wine needs to have a file /usr/local/etc/wine.conf or a .winerc that is in your home directory.
Edit the file to reflect your local configuration. Click here for an example .winerc
Downloading BlitzIn 1.72 16-bit version
Download BlitzIn 1.72 16 bit version (filename bltz172.exe) from the ICC web page http://www.chessclub.com

at the shell prompt
Double click on the bltz172.exe file you have downloaded.

Press the OK button after the files have been installed.
Return to the File Manager and open up the c:\blitzin directory and double click on the blitzin.exe file and the BlitzIn program will start. Then click
- Connection | New
- Under the advanced options box replace chessclub.com with 207.99.5.190.
The IP number has to be given because of a bug in WINE
If you are a member enter your Handle and Password in the Members box and check the Save password box. Then
- click the Connect button and you will log on to the ICC server.
After you have connected click Connection | Save Profile and press the OK button
Some caveats
-
Wine is still alpha software; it is prone to crashing although BlitzIn seems pretty stable with it;
-
There are still problems with fonts under WINE;
-
scrolling is very poor with the bottom line of the text obscured.
However unlike under WABI, BlitzIn can now be run in 16 bit colour.
