Excellent Utilities: cheat.sh – community driven cheat sheet

Last Updated on May 22, 2022

In Operation

You can get a brief idea of the information and functionality available with the command:

$ curl cheat.sh

cheat.sh

We’ll use cht.sh for our demonstrations, if only because the syntax is more streamlined and there’s more functionality on offer.

Cheat Sheets

The video below shows us accessing the shell functionality, and viewing cheat sheets for Lua, C and C++.

One of cht.sh’s sources is the excellent Learn X in Y scenic programming language tours, a repository of concise documentation devoted to learning programming languages from scratch. You’ve got access to cheat sheets for 58 programming languages covering all the popular languages and more.

Let’s drill down a bit further. Say you want to know about looping through a list in C#. At the cht.sh prompt, change into the C# directory and query about lists.

Programming language questions

Another very useful feature is the ability to query questions about programming languages and receive instant help. Again you can make web queries, or use the cht.sh client.

cht-sh-r-reverse-vector

In the image above, we’ve learned how to reverse order a vector. Note the prompt is showing cht.sh/r. That’s because we restricted our query to the R programming language. Information here is retrieved from Stack Overflow.
