Guide on the Side
Guide on the Side is an open source tool that allows
librarians to quickly and effortlessly create online, interactive
tutorials that are based on the principles of authentic and active
learning. Active learning describes the need for students to read,
write, discuss, or be engaged in solving problems, rather than merely
listening to instructions.
Students can read the instructions provided by the librarian
while actively using a database, without needing to switch between
screens. This allows students to use a database while still receiving
expert guidance, much like they could in the classroom.
Guide on the Side is built using the CakePHP framework. It has
received the ACRL Instruction Section Innovation Award.
