gzip
gzip provides the standard GNU file compression utilities,
which are also the default compression tools for Debian. They
typically operate on files with names ending in '.gz', but can also
decompress files
ending in '.Z' created with 'compress'.
Features include:
- Uses by default the LZ77 algorithm
- Compression is generally much
better than that achieved by LZW (as used in compress), Huffman
coding (as used in pack), or adaptive Huffman coding
(compact)
- Multiple compressed files can be concatenated
