None of the 5 icons above represent applications. Web Learn is
a link
to skoool.ie, a website which offers an interactive educational
experience for Irish students and teachers. Clicking on the
first 4 icons takes you to the following pages respectively.
Science page
The
science tab has 2 applications available labelled Periodic Table, and
Planetarium.
Periodic Table is Kalzium, a KDE
program which provides lots of information about the Periodic System of
Elements. Besides a graphical display of the periodic table,
it offers pictures, energies, chemical data, and atom models of each
element, as well as other miscellaneous information such as the year of
the element's discovery. Students may particularly like the
timeline feature, which allows them to explore the elements that had
been discovered by a particular year.
The Planetarium icon is the KStars application, a graphical
desktop
planetarium for KDE.
It depicts an accurate simulation of the night sky, showing
planets, stars, constellations, star clusters, nebulae, comets,
asteroids and much more. It has the core set of features
needed by amateur astronomers, such as natural colour sky simulation,
night
vision and star charting modes; SAO star, Messier, NGC and IC
catalogues by default plus the potential to add additional ones;
equatorial and alt-azimuthal coordinates; and lots more.
Language page
The typing icon is "Tux Typing", an educational typing tutor
for
children. It features several different types of gameplay (such as
finger exercises, typing short, medium and long words)
at a variety of difficulty levels.
The next icon, Letter Game, represents the KMessedWords
application. This is a a simple mind-training game, in which you have
to "figure out" the word that has been given in the program.
The other icon is everyone's old favorite, the classic Hangman
game. KHangman is aimed at children aged 6+, and has four levels of
difficulty.
Math page
Fraction Tutorial is KBruch, a small program to practice
calculating with fractions. Students are offered 4 different types of
exercises;
solving a given fraction task, comparing 2 fractions, converting a
number into a fraction, and factorizing a given number
into its prime factors.
The "TuxMath icon" launches "Tux of Math Command", an
educational math tutor for
children
starring Tux, the Linux Penguin. The game consists of lessons
in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
The Geometry icon is Kig, an application for interactive
geometry. It allows students to explore mathematical figures
and concepts as well as to serve as a tool for drawing mathematical
figures.
The final icon is labelled "Function Plotter". This is the
KmPlot application, a mathematical function plotter, with a powerful
built-in parser. KmPlot can plot functions simultaneously and
combine them to build new functions.
Paint page
Paint is the mtPaint application written by Mark Tyler. This
is a painting program designed to create pixel art and manipulate
digital
photos. Unlike the vast majority of applications bundled with
the Eee PC, MtPaint uses the GTK+ toolkit (which is the toolkit used by
GNOME).
The other application in this section is Tux Paint, an
interactive
paint program designed for children three years and up.
