It is only necessary for programs that use this library (such as jed and slrn). If you plan on doing development with S-Lang, you will need the companion -dev package as well.

Unless there is a SLP DA in the network, you must install the slpd package to be able to advertise the services.
libsm6 1.0.1-3 This package provides the main interface to the X11 Session Management library, which allows for applications to both manage sessions, and make use of session managers to save and restore their state for later use.
libsmbclient 3.0.24-6xandros3 libsmbclient allows to write applications that use the SMB/CIFS protocol. This gives applications the ability to talk to Microsoft Windows servers and Unix servers running Samba.

SMPEG (SDL MPEG Player Library) is a free MPEG1 video player library with sound support. Video playback is based on the ubiquitous Berkeley MPEG player, mpeg_play v2.2. Audio is played through a slightly modified mpegsound library, part of splay v0.8.2. SMPEG supports MPEG audio (MP3), MPEG-1 video, and MPEG system streams. This package contains the libsmpeg shared library that is required by many MPEG-playing packages, including smpeg-xmms and smpeg-plaympeg.

libsvga1 1.4.3-24 svgalib provides graphics capabilities to programs running on the system console, without going through the X Window System. It uses direct access to the video hardware to provide low-level access to the standard VGA and SVGA graphics modes. Only works with some video hardware; use with caution.

libtag1c2a 1.4-4 TagLib is a library for reading and editing the meta-data of several popular audio formats. Currently it supports both ID3v1 and ID3v2 for MP3 files, Ogg Vorbis comments and ID3 tags and Vorbis comments in FLAC files.

Theora is an open video codec being developed by the Xiph.org Foundation as part of their Ogg project (It is a project that aims to integrate On2's VP3 video codec, Ogg Vorbis audio codec and Ogg multimedia container formats into a multimedia solution that can compete with MPEG-4 format). Theora is derived directly from On2's VP3 codec; currently the two are nearly identical, varying only in framing headers, but Theora will diverge and improve from the main VP3 development lineage as time progresses.

Gecko features include XPCOM, networking, DOM editing and transaction support, XBL, XUL, SVG, XSLT, XML Extras (XMLHttpRequest and DOMParser), Web Services (SOAP), accessibility support, IPC services, gtkmozembed, JavaXPCOM, etc.
libxul0d 1.8.0.11-2 This library provides an API for XUL applications and Gecko embedders. The Gecko engine is the core of the mozilla.org applications such as Firefox, Thunderbird or SeaMonkey.
libxv1 1.0.2-1 libXv provides an X Window System (X.Org) client interface to the XVideo extension to the X protocol.
libxvmc1 1.0.2-2 libXvMC provides an X Window System client interface to the XVideo-MotionCompensation extension to the X protocol. The XVideo-MotionCompensation extension allows for further accelerated drawing of videos. Video data may be sent at earlier stages of the decoding pipeline than raw YUV data. At the moment, driver support for XvMC is poor to non-existent.
libxxf86dga1 1.0.1-2 libXxf86dga provides the XFree86-DGA extension, which allows direct graphics access to a framebuffer-like region, and also allows relative mouse reporting, et al. It is mainly used by games and emulators for games.
libxxf86vm1 1.0.1-2 libXxf86vm provides an interface to the XFree86-VidModeExtension extension, which allows client applications to get and set video mode timings in extensive detail. It is used by the xvidtune program in particular.
linux-image-2.6.21.4-eeepc 5 Linux kernel binary image for version 2.6.21.4-eeepc. It also contains the corresponding System.map file, and the modules built by the packager. It also contains scripts that try to ensure that the system is not left in a unbootable state after an update.
linux-sound-base 1.0.13-5 This package allows the administrator to choose between the OSS and ALSA sound systems.
locales 2.3.6.ds1-13 GNU C Library: National Language (locale) data [support]. Machine-readable data files, shared objects and programs used by the C library for localization (l10n) and internationalization (i18n) support.
lockfile-progs 0.1.10 This package includes several programs to safely lock and unlock files and mailboxes from the command line.
login 4.0.18.1-7 These tools are required to be able to login and use your system. The login program invokes your user shell and enables command execution. The newgrp program is used to change your effective group ID (useful for workgroup type situations). The su program allows changing your effective user ID (useful being able to execute commands as another user).
logrotate 3.7.1-3 The logrotate utility is designed to simplify the administration of log files on a system which generates a lot of log files. Logrotate allows for the automatic rotation compression, removal and mailing of log files. Logrotate can be set to handle a log file daily, weekly, monthly or when the log file gets to a certain size. Normally, logrotate runs as a daily cron job.
lsb-base 3.1-23.1 The Linux Standard Base is a standard core system that third-party applications written for Linux can depend upon. This package only includes the init-functions shell library, which may be used by other packages' initialization scripts for console logging and other purposes.
ltris 1.0.11-1 LTris is a very polished tetris clone, which offers three types of games. The classic mode, a figures mode, where different figures appear every level, and a multiplayer mode. LTris is highly configurable through its menu system.
makedev 2.3.1-83 The MAKEDEV executable is used to create device files, often in /dev.
man-db 2.4.3-6 This package provides the man command, the primary way of examining the on-line help files (manual pages). Other utilities provided include the whatis and apropos commands for searching the manual page database, the manpath utility for determining the manual page search path, and the maintenance utilities mandb, catman and zsoelim. man-db uses the groff suite of programs to format and display the manual pages.

mawk 1.3.3-11 Mawk is an interpreter for the AWK Programming Language. The AWK language is useful for manipulation of data files, text retrieval and processing, and for prototyping and experimenting with algorithms. Mawk is a new awk meaning it implements the AWK language as defined in Aho, Kernighan and Weinberger, The AWK Programming Language, Addison-Wesley Publishing, 1988. (Hereafter referred to as the AWK book.) Mawk conforms to the POSIX 1003.2 (draft 11.3) definition of the AWK language which contains a few features not described in the AWK book, and mawk provides a small number of extensions.
mc 4.6.1-6 GNU Midnight Commander is a text-mode full-screen file manager. It uses a two panel interface and a subshell for command execution. It includes an internal editor with syntax highlighting and an internal viewer with support for binary files. Also included is Virtual Filesystem (VFS), that allows files on remote systems (e.g. FTP, SSH, SMB servers) and files inside archives to be manipulated like real files.
menu-xdg 0.2.3 menu-xdg contains menu-methods to convert the Debian menu structure to the freedesktop.org xdg menu structure.
metacity-common 2.14.5-4 Metacity is a small window manager, using gtk2 to do everything.

mktemp 1.5-2 Mktemp is a simple utility designed to make temporary file handling in shells scripts be safe and simple.
module-init-tools 3.3-pre4-2 Contains a set of programs for loading, inserting, and removing kernel modules for Linux (versions 2.5.48 and above). It serves the same function that the "modutils" package serves for Linux 2.4.
mount 2.12r-19 Tools for mounting and manipulating filesystems This package provides the mount(8), umount(8), swapon(8), swapoff(8), and losetup(8) commands.
mozilla-mplayer 3.31+main-1xandros1 mplayerplug-in is a Mozilla browser plugin to allow playing embedded movies on web pages using mplayer.
mp3info 0.8.4-9.2 MP3Info has an interactive mode (using curses) and a command line mode. MP3Info can display ID3 tag information as well as various technical aspects of an MP3 file including playing time, bit-rate, sampling frequency and other attributes in a pre-defined or user-specifiable output format.
mpg321 0.2.10.3 mpg321 is a clone of the popular mpg123 command-line mp3 player. It should function as a drop-in replacement for mpg123 in many cases. While some of the functionality of mpg123 is not yet implemented, mpg321 should function properly in most cases for most people, such as for frontends such as gqmpeg.

MPlayer plays most MPEG, VOB, AVI, Ogg/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, FLI, RM, NuppelVideo, yuv4mpeg, FILM, RoQ, PVA files, supported by many native, XAnim, RealPlayer, and Win32 DLL codecs. You can watch VideoCD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx, RealMedia, and DivX movies too.
Another big feature of MPlayer is the wide range of supported output drivers. It works with X11, Xv, DGA, OpenGL, SVGAlib, fbdev, DirectFB, but also SDL (and this way all its drivers) and some lowlevel card-specific drivers (for Matrox, 3Dfx and Radeon, Mach64, Permedia3) Most of them supports software or hardware scaling, so you can enjoy movies in fullscreen. MPlayer supports also displaying through some hardware MPEG decoder boards, such as the DVB and DXR3/Hollywood+.
mplayer-skin-blue 1.6-1 Contains the Blue skin by Xenomorph. This is currently considered the default skin for MPlayer.
mtpaint 3.11-1 mtPaint is a free, open source graphic editing program which uses the GTK+ toolkit. It is geared towards creating indexed palette images and pixel art. Due to its efficient design it can run on older PC hardware (e.g. a 200MHz CPU and 32MB of RAM). It can edit indexed palette or 24 bit RGB images and offers basic painting and palette manipulation tools. It is aimed to be simple and easy to use. it also can handle JPEG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, XPM, and XBM files.
nano <2.0.2-1/td> GNU nano is a free replacement for Pico, the default Pine editor. Pine is copyrighted under a restrictive licence, that makes it unsuitable for Debian's main section. GNU nano is an effort to provide a Pico-like editor, but also includes some features that were missing in the original, such as 'search and replace', 'goto line' or internationalization support.
ncurses-base 5.5-5 Contains what should be a reasonable subset of terminal definitions, including: ansi, dumb, linux, rxvt, screen, sun, vt100, vt102, vt220, vt52, and xterm.
ncurses-bin 5.5-5 Contains the programs used for manipulating the terminfo database and individual terminfo entries, as well as some programs for resetting terminals and such.
net-tools 1.60-17 Includes the important tools for controlling the network subsystem of the Linux kernel. This includes arp, ifconfig, netstat, rarp, nameif and route. Additionally, this package contains utilities relating to particular network hardware types (plipconfig, slattach, mii-tool) and advanced aspects of IP configuration (iptunnel, ipmaddr).
netbase 4.29 Provides the necessary infrastructure for basic TCP/IP based networking.
netcat 1.10-32 A simple Unix utility which reads and writes data across network connections using TCP or UDP protocol. It is designed to be a reliable "back-end" tool that can be used directly or easily driven by other programs and scripts. At the same time it is a feature-rich network debugging and exploration tool, since it can create almost any kind of connection you would need and has several interesting built-in capabilities.
