Xandros is based on Corel Linux, a Debian
based distribution that was acquired following Corel's decision to sell
that part of their business. Unlike Debian,
Xandros is a commercial distribution and is available in a number of
different editions although there is a version (Xandros Open
Circulation Edition) available for no charge with the condition that it
is only used for non-commercial use.
Xandros is noted as being a good looking, easy to use desktop, suitable
for users migrating from Windows. It also has good
integration
with Windows networks.
The Premium edition adds the following features: 3D effects on the
Desktop, Music Manager, ability to create MP3s, iPod compatibility,
Photo Manager, CrossOver Office, NTFS writing support, Xandros Security
Suite, Xandros Anti-Virus, Home folder encryption, and Xandros PPTP
VPN. In the Professional edition you also receive the
Evolution
Groupware Client, Windows PDC and Active Directory authentication, and
3G /GSM support.
There are also business and education editions available.
