Low-Spec Hardware? Try these Desktop Environments
I have selected my pick of desktop environments that are excellent candidates for older hardware. They typically run well on low-spec machines, even a system with a Pentium II 266MHz CPU, a processor that is now 16 years old. All of the desktops are released under freely distributable licenses. If your Linux box feels sluggish in general use, try one of the desktops featured below. It may just save you from discarding a perfectly good machine.

    Emperor is an orthodox file manager for the GNOME desktop. It uses a two-pane 'Commander'-style layout familiar to users of Total Commander, Krusader, or Midnight Commander. Emperor strives to bring this style of file management nto the modern nGNOME desktop by using GIO and GVfs, the technologies that are used in Nautilus and across the GNOME desktop to access the file system.

    Filecentral is a filesystem browser and file manager. It uses the navigational model of the OSX finder, but tries to integrate into the GNOME Desktop. It uses gnome-vfs and is thus also able to manage remote files.
  • gfile
    gfile is a file manager for Linux which is based on Gtk/Gnome and is a tree like explorer (under Windows 95).
  • GFileRunner
    GFileRunner is a GNOME-based file manager aimed to be a nicer, faster, and more powerful replacement for the current popular file manager, Nautilus.
  • GNOME Commander
    GNOME Commander is a GPL licensed filemanager with FTP and CVS capabilities and as the name sugests there are some similarities with the classical Norton commander. Read more

    offers an alternative to file managers and application menus. The user's files, media, contacts, tasks and bookmarks are presented in a convenient desktop sidebar. The aim is to focus on the data files themselves, rather than the applications used to edit them
  • Nautilus Actions
    Nautilus actions is an extension for Nautilus, the gnome file manager. It allow to configure program to be launch on files selected into Nautilus interface.
  • nautilus-search-tool
    nautilus-search-tool is a Nautilus extension to have "search files" on a popup menu.
  • Nemo
    Nemo is a file manager forked from Nautilus 3.4.x.
  • PanelFM
    PanelFM helps you to quickly browse through the files and directories on your local disk. It is not intended to replace a file manager, but rather complement it by providing a minimal interface for speeding up the task of locating and opening a file or directory.
  • Tumblefile
    Tumblefile is an automatic, chronological file organizer for GNOME.
  • Waffle
    Waffle's A Fast File Level Explorer: something that is fast, configurable, and able to do all the things a file explorer should do
