    MAD is a high-quality MPEG audio decoder. It currently supports MPEG-1 and the MPEG-2 extension to lower sampling frequencies, as well as the de facto MPEG 2.5 format. All three audio layers ? Layer I, Layer II, and Layer III (i.e. MP3) ? are fully implemented.

    MJS is a console mp3-player with some special features not found in most console based mp3-players. It features a search function, playlist saving and loading and an easy to use interface.

    MP3 STATION is a free simple and very light text/curses frontend for mpg123 (or clones) intended to be used under a generic unix environment. It was built to handle mp3 playback in a car.

    Mp3Blaster is an interactive text-based program that plays mp3 audio files with full control during playback.

    mpg123-mysql consists of some patches to mpg123 which make it support MySQL for rating support and playlist support.
  • mpg123-thor
    mpg123-thor is a version of mpg123, the well-known and highly efficient MP3 player, with a generic control interface that has been enhanced with the possibility to control the built-in equalizer in real-time.
  • mpg321
    mpg321 is a completely free drop-in replacement for mpg123. It has been designed to work as a drop-in replacement for mpg123, for the use of frontends, shell scripts, etc. It does all mp3 decoding using the high-quality integer-only MAD library.
  • music on console
    music on console is a console audio player, with simple ncurses interface. Currently it supports MP3, OGG, and WAVE formats. Playlists can be saved and loaded in m3u files. The playback is smooth because MOC uses output buffer in a separate thread and precaches files while playing.
  • Musicus
    Musicus is a component of the Cjukebox music management system. It is a command line tool that uses xmms pluggins for playing back music. It is written in C++. Musicus can be either used in batch mode or in an interactive mode In batch mode the files given on the commandline will played.
  • Mylene
    Mylene is a command line MPEG audio player. It can play plain or system embedded MPEG audio streams. Currently, it only works with Linux OSS (and with ALSA with OSS emulation).
  • Orpheus
    Orpheus is a light-weight text mode menu- and window-driven audio player application for CDs and files in MP3 format.
  • pimp3
    pimp3 is a Python Intelligent MP3 player.
  • Plait
    Plait (pronounced "play") is a quick and easy to use command line music player controller. It can do two things for you: find and play music from your personal music library, and find and play Shoutcast radio streams.
  • PyAudioPlay
    PyAudioPlay is a set of Python classes which tie together the pyao, pymad, aifc and wav modules into a single threaded media player. The actual Player class does all of its playback within a Python thread allowing the host application to perform others tasks and not have to worry about managing the audio playback.

    qplay is a free console-based audio player with a queue ([kju?]). It uses the standard GNU/Linux command line players mpg123 and ogg123 for actual music playback.

    A simple music manager and player that features a user interface that lets users carry out tasks very rapidly.
  • xcplay
    xcplay is an ncurses interface for xmms. UI-clone of cplay with xmms as a backend instead of console players.
  • ximp3
    ximp3 is a simple console MP3 player. It is based on the GPL'ed Xing decoder also used in FreeAmp.
  • xmplayer
    xmplayer is a xmms replacement in bash. Xmplayer executes, only once, mplayer in background and controls it through a FIFO. It supports all the (useful) features you'll find in XMMS and it is easily extendible.
