  • LAME
LAME is an educational tool to be used for learning about MP3 encoding. The goal of the LAME project is to use the open source model to improve the psycho acoustics, noise shaping and speed of MP3. LAME is not for everyone - it is distributed as source code only and requires the ability to use a C compiler. However, many popular ripping and encoding programs include the LAME encoding engine. It features: MPEG1,2 and 2.5 layer III encoding., CBR (constant bitrate) and two types of variable bitrate, VBR and ABR, Encoding engine can be compiled as a shared library (Linux/UNIX), DLL or ACM codec (Windows), GPSYCHO: a GPL'd psycho acoustic and noise shaping model, and has many improvements in quality in speed over ISO reference software. hot
  • 8hz-mp3
8hz-mp3 is a free MP3 encoder which is currently not available due to licensing issues.
  • Aften
Aften is a simple A/52 (AC-3) audio encoder based on the FFMpeg libraries. The name is an acronym for A/Fifty-Two ENcoder. It creates stereo and multi-channel AC3-compatible audio streams.
  • autolame
autolame is a script to encode .WAVs without user interaction.
  • BladeEnc
BladeEnc is a freeware MP3 encoder. It is based on the same ISO compression routines as mpegEnc, so you can expect roughly the same, or better, quality. It is no longer being developed.
  • cdenc
cdenc lets you encode whole audio CDs in a special directory which can be burned on CDROM afterwards. It tries to extract all necessary informations for the mp3info tags from the CDDB.
  • Dlame
Distributed Lame: a wrapper to encode CDs on multiple CPUs in a network.
  • GOGO
GOGO is an MP3 encoder for x86-CPU, which is based on LAME ver 3.23beta.
  • lame-rtp
lame-rtp is a small patch to lame which will make it output the mp3 stream not only as file but also as an RTP multicast stream.
  • LameBrain
LameBrain is a LAME-based MP3 encoder with the following features: drag-and-drop batch file processing, CD ripping with FreeDB support, and saving of encoding settings in "profiles," which can be loaded for later use.
  • libb64
libb64 is a library of ANSI C routines for fast encoding/decoding data into and from a base64-encoded format. C++ wrappers are included, as well as the source code for standalone encoding and decoding executables.
  • NotLame MP3 encoder
NotLame MP3 encoder us based on the open source L.A.M.E. MP3 encoding engine. This encoder produces MP3 files of much higher quality (less distortion) than every other free encoder and beats many commercial encoders.
  • Parallel Bladeenc
Parallel Bladeenc is a true parallel version of the Bladeenc MP3 encoder; it distributes work across CPUs to speed up MP3 encoding.
  • ripit
ripit is a small console-based program written in perl for ripping, encoding & tagging MP3s. It needs cdparanoia, bladeenc and xmcd (for CDDB access).
  • TwoLAME
TwoLAME is a fork of tooLAME - an optimized MPEG Audio Layer 2 encoder. New features include a fully thread-safe library, with an API very similar to LAME's.
