One of my favorite adages is "A picture is worth a thousand words". It refers to the notion that a still image can convey a complex idea. Images can portray a lot of information quickly and more efficiently than text. They capture memories, and never let you forget something you want to remember, and refresh it in your memory.

  • DraftSight

  • Lx-Viewer
    LX-Viewer is a program that will allow you to open, view, print and convert DWG or DXF files, typically used in AutoCAD related technical drafting. The most important feature is that LX-Viewer allows you to manipulate your DWG data on the Linux platform. You may zoom and pan the drawing as you would in AutoCAD. Files can be saved to DWG or DXF formats from AutoCAD version 2.5 to 2002, also as BMP, SVG and PNG formats.

    (commercial) A multiplatform CAD/CAM system designed for manufacturing. Synergy CAD is free. The CAM and solid modeling portions of Synergy require an access code.
  • ThanCad
    A 2 dimensional CAD, with raster inclusion capability and emphasis in engineering. It is being written in Python and since it uses the Tkinter library, it is platform independent.
  • VariCAD
    (commercial) VariCAD is a 3D/2D mechanical CAD system for Linux (RedHat, SuSE, Mandrake, Debian) and Windows. It includes many powerful tools for 3D modeling, 2D drafting, associate dimensioning, libraries (ANSI, DIN ..), calculations, tools for working with non-graphical information, such as bills of materials (BOM), and more.
  • VGI
    A collection of tools which enables a designer to extract VHDL from blockdiagrams and state machines.
  • xSpace
    xSpace is a set of tools aiming to build an extensible platform for CAD.
  • XTrkCad
    (commercial) XTrkCad is a CAD program for designing Model Railroad layouts. XTrkCad supports any scale, has libraries of popular brands of turnouts and sectional track (plus you add your own easily), can automatically use spiral transition curves when joining track and has extensive on-line help and demonstrations. XTrkCad lets you manipulate track much like you would with actual flex-track to modify, extend and join tracks and turnouts. Additional features include tunnels, 'post-it' notes, on-screen ruler, parts list, 99 drawing layers, undo/redo commands, benchwork, 'Print to BitMap', elevations, train simulation and car inventory.
