Linux has a good range of extremely strong chess engines such as Stockfish, Critter, Togo II, Crafty, GNU Chess, and Komodo. The chess engines featured in this article offer no match to a good chess engine, but they show how much can be achieved with a minuscule codebase.

HylaFAX is an enterprise-class system for sending and receiving facsimiles as well as for sending alpha-numeric pages. The software is designed around a client-server architecture. Fax modems may reside on a single machine on a network and clients can submit an outbound job from any other machine on the network. Client software is designed to be lightweight and easy to port.     Gtraffic is a sliding block puzzle game for GNOME. It is based on Rush Hour created by Binary Arts Corporation. The goal is to remove all of the red car(s) out of the grid through the slot on the left. To do this you have to slide the other cars out of the way.

    Hex-a-hop is a puzzle game based on hexagonal tiles. There is no time limit and no real-time elements. The objective is simply to destroy all the green hexagonal tiles on each of the 100 levels. The game is played by moving the triangle in the center of the screen and "zapping" the blocks in the surrounding grid. However, rather than hitting the ball with a paddle like breakout, the player controls the left and right movement of the ball with the arrow keys. The ball still bounces up and down on its own, but there is no bottom to fall off of.
