Linux has finally come of age and is now a legitimate gaming platform. The release of quality commercial titles such as Left 4 Dead 2, Portal, and Day of Defeat bring real credibility to Linux as a first-class gaming platform. The bid to lure gamers away from Microsoft's platform has also been strengthened, in part, due to the official launch of Steam for the Linux operating system back on February 14.

    Scid is a chess database application for Unix/Linux (and now also Windows) operating systems. Scid is free. With Scid you can maintain a database of chess games, search games by many criteria, view graphical trends, and produce printable reports on players and openings. You can also analyze games with the chess program Scidlet or any other WinBoard-compatible chess engine, and even use Scid to study endings with endgame tablebases. Read more hot

    Chessdgm takes a .fen postion file as input and outputs a string that can be pasted into a wordprocessor.
  • ChessX
    ChessX is a chess database tool. It reads PGN files (one and multi games), has players database, lets user set up a board, navigate through game with variants and comments, copy/past FEN and PGN into the app. It is actively developed and is cross-platform being developed on Qt 4.2.
  • ColChess
    ColChess is primarily an analysis engine, though it can also be used for playing competitive games. It uses the brute force analysis method for tree searching, meaning that it analyses far more nodes per move than an ordinary chess program such as GNUChess or Crafty, but it cuts out all the guesswork so that its analysis is always accurate to the depth specified.
  • Fianchetto
    Fianchetto is a free chess tournament manager for swiss tournaments. It is not intended for on-line tournaments, but its aim is the management of traditional chess tournaments, those with a board and chess pieces. It reads a database of players from an ascii file and arranges the pairings each round, asking for the results of the games.

    novagdrv is a userspace driver to connect Novag chess computers to desktop PC programs. It includes patches for ChessDB and EBoard. On ChessDB, it lets you enter your moves to ChessDB in realtime or transfer the whole game when you finish. You may take back, introduce variations, etc. On EBoard, it allows you to play games on FICS (Free Internet Chess Server) using the chess computer. You may also play against chess engines like gnuchess or crafty.
  • Pacaq
    Pacaq (pronounced [par-tsarck]) is a chess game visualization and analysis tool with a Qt-based GUI. It can load Portable Game Notation (PGN) files and then show and animate recorded games move by move. It handles any recursive annotation variations recorded in the game file.
  • Python chess module
    Python chess module does not how to play chess, but does understand the rules enough that it can watch moves and verify that they are correct.
  • SOSS
