Low-Spec Hardware? Try these Desktop Environments
I have selected my pick of desktop environments that are excellent candidates for older hardware. They typically run well on low-spec machines, even a system with a Pentium II 266MHz CPU, a processor that is now 16 years old. All of the desktops are released under freely distributable licenses. If your Linux box feels sluggish in general use, try one of the desktops featured below. It may just save you from discarding a perfectly good machine.

    Sporktris is a clone of Tetris-clones. It is meant to be fun, functional, and pretty, with as little annoyance as possible.

    Tutris is yet another Tetris clone.
  • TwinTRIS
    TwinTRIS is a multiplayer tetris clone (even one player mode is possible.) It works fine under both Linux and Solaris.
  • Vertris
    Vertris is a simple cross-platform Tetris clone that uses the Allegro library for graphics.
  • vitetris
    vitetris is a Tetris clone for the terminal that doesn't use ncurses. It features configurable keys, a high score table, and 2-player mode. Gameplay is much like the early Tetris games by Nintendo.
  • XBlockOut
    XBlockOut is a game involving dropping blocks like Xtetris but in 3 dimensions. Points are scored for each block that comes to rest on the gradually building up pile of blocks.
  • xpuyopuyo
    Puyo puyo is a puzzle game, somewhat like Tetris, where you strive to match up four "blobs" of the same color. Each match you make gives points, and also dumps gray rocks on the opponent which are irritating and troublesome to get rid of. Multiple matches at a time score more points, and dump more rocks on the opponent (a quintuple-match will dump around 20 rocks on the opponent, all at once).

    xtris is a networked Tetris-like game for the X Window system.
  • XWelltris
    XWelltris is a tetris like popular game. Imaging that you are looking into the glass from the top. You see four walls and the bottom. The flat 2d figures falling down from the walls one by one. You can move these figures from one wall to another or rotate them. If the figure leave the wall then it moves on the bottom while another figure is pushed. Read more

    Yet Another X-Tetris is as you can imagine one more tetris game. It it supposed to compile and play in most Unix platforms.
  • yetris
    yetris is Tetris on the console. It has colors and highscore, along with many features found on modern Tetris implementations. It's made with C and runs on (most) Linux terminals.
