What are good command line HTTP clients?
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts is a very famous quote from Aristotle, a Greek philosopher and scientist. This quote is particularly pertinent to Linux. In my view, one of Linux's biggest strengths is its synergy. The usefulness of Linux doesn't derive only from the huge raft of open source (command line) utilities. Instead, it's the synergy generated by using them together, sometimes in conjunction with larger applications.

mod_perl lets you write Apache modules entirely in Perl. In addition, the persistent interpreter embedded in the server avoids the overhead of starting an external interpreter and the penalty of Perl start-up time.


  • Nero Linux
    (commercial) Nero Linux is a flexible graphical application to assist in burning writable CDs and DVDs in many formats. It supports all types of internal and external recorders that are supported by the API of the established Nero application for Windows. It features kernel optimizations for both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels, digital audio extraction, FreeDB support, and USB hotplugging. Video editing capabilities are not yet included. Read more hot
  • Bonfire
    Bonfire is an application to burn CD/DVD for the gnome desktop. It is designed to be as simple as possible and has some unique features to enable users to create their discs easily and quickly. Features include: burn / copy / erase data and audio discs, allows full editing of data discs (remove/move/rename files inside a directory, ...) as well as audio discs, handle all audio files if Gstreamer supports them, with a customisable GUI.

    Brasero is an application to burn CDs/DVDs. It is designed to be as simple as possible, and has some unique features to enable users to create their discs easily and quickly. Read more
  • BurnerOnFire
    BurnerOnFire is multi-threaded program that can write same content (iso files for now) to multiple CD/DVD burners simultaneously. It uses D-Bus/HAL specification to interact with hardware. It spawns subprocesses that wrap around command line program Wodim. BurnerOnFire has both CLI and GUI(GTK+) interfaces.
  • CD-Mason
    CD-Mason is a GTK+ gui for cdrecord and mkisofs aimed at being easy to use for inexeperienced users.
  • CDrecorder
    A gui for cdrecord and mkisofs built using gtk (primarily). It can copy a directory on to a CD, burn an iso image file on to a CD, make an iso image of a directory, blank a CDRW & copy a data CD (iso9660 format).
  • cdw
    Cdw is an ncurses and GTK2 based CD burning frontend for cdrecord & mkisofs. Running on linux console and GNOME desktop.
  • Coaster
    Coaster-GUI is the graphical user frontend for the libburn library. The goal is to present the user with a complete yet simple burning solution. Features include: Audio cd sessions, data cd sessions, file drag and drop from nautilus, and the ability to save and restore sessions from file.
  • Disc-O-Matic
    A GTK+ CD/DVD-ROM archiving tool for mastering and burning multiple discs. It can be used in situations where you have a lot of data that you wish to burn to discs (e.g. keeping an MP3 collection synchronized with a set of CD-RWs).
  • ECLiPt Roaster
    A graphical frontend for cdrecord, mkisofs written in gnome-python.
  • gcombust
    A gtk+ frontend for mkisofs/cdrecord gtk+ written in C. Features include: burning data on the fly from hard drive, without making an image, cd-to-cd data copy on the fly, easy creation of iso-images and Audio CD creation.
  • Gnome CD Master
    A GUI frontend for creating audio CDs and burning them using cdrdao. It has an easy to use interface, with multiple project support.
    Graveman! is a GPL frontend for cdrecord, mkisofs, readcd, sox, flac, dvd+rw-format/dvd+rw-tools and cdrdao.
  • Kitty-Kitty
    A gtk-perl frontend to cdrecord and mkisofs. It is not feature rich and is designed to automate some common cd making tasks.
  • MrBurns
    MrBurns is an easy to use drag n drop Audio CD burning application. It uses hal device manager to detect the burning device and offers a easy to use drag and drop interface.
  • Serpentine
    Serpentine is an application for writing CD-Audio discs. It aims for simplicity, usability and compability. Its features are: Supports multiple formats files, like WAV, MP3, OGG, FLAC and every other gstreamer does Save and open PLS, M3U and XSPF playlists, support for K3B audio projects, imports Rhythmbox internal playlists, extracts audio from video contents, like an MPEG video Uses audio metadata for better handling.
  • SimpleCDR-X
    Features Disc-At-Once CD copying, Audio CD copying via cdrecord and CDparanoia or cdda2wav, Audio CD Mastering, MP3/OGG import via MADplay, LAME, or OGG123.
  • X-CD-Roast
    X-CD-Roast tries to be the most flexible CD-burning software ever. It allows even the unexperienced user to create or copy a CD with a few mouse clicks in a intuitive and nice looking graphical user interface.
