9 First Steps with Ubuntu 15.04
One of the first things to do with a new release of Ubuntu is to check for updates. Typically, I won't upgrade to the latest release immediately, so there's always quite a few updates since the release. There's a handy Software Updater tool which makes the updating process painless.

  • EasyFind
    EasyFind is an alternative to or supplement of Spotlight and finds files, folders or contents in any file without the need for indexing. This is especially useful if you are tired of slow or impossible indexing, outdated or corrupted indices or if you are just looking for features missing in the Finder or Spotlight.
  • Eraser
    This application permits you to erase files or folders immediately. You can use it to delete one or more file or folder from your hard disk without passing from the Trash.
  • File Adopter
    File Adopter uses your Internet Config preferences to add type and creator codes to files that lack them. Typeless files are common on Mac OS X, and are a source of numerous frustrations.
  • FileControl
    FileControl helps you easily determine which files have been installed, downloaded or changed anywhere on your system.
  • FileCutter
    (shareware) FileCutter enhances the Finder context menu to let you cut and paste files (rather than just copy and paste) and lets you paste an alias to a copied file.
  • FileMyFiles
    (commercial) With FileMyFiles, one click copies essential files to your laptop for traveling. There are powerful options to change all the file/folder names in a folder.
  • Folder Splitter
    Folder Splitter is a helper aplication, that can split one large folder into several smaller ones.
  • FolderGlance
    FolderGlance is a small Contextual Menu Plugin for the Finder. When it is installed, it allows you to control-click or right-click on folders to see and open their contents, as well as examine the contents of sub-folders down an unlimited number of levels.
  • GrandPerspective
    GrandPerspective is a small utility application that graphically shows the disk usage within a file system. It can help you to manage your disk, as you can easily spot which files and folders take up the most space. It uses a so called tree map for visualisation.
  • HoudahSpot
    HoudahSpot is a file search tool based on Apple's Spotlight technology. It enables users to quickly create and store powerful search queries.
  • iLikeYouMore
    iLikeYouMore is a filetype/creator changer which has support for multiple files.
  • InerziaIcon
    With this little application you can keep track of the various icons left around in your hard disk.
  • iRepair
    iRepair can help you change permission of your files and folders. Just select a file or an entire folder, eventually with all its content, choose your settings and apply. Repair broken permission, share data between users, perform administration tasks.
  • iShred
    iShred provides an interface to the "SRM" or secure delete function.
  • LengthControl
    LengthControl is a simple and powerful utility to control the name length of files and folders. LengthControl displays the file name length and warns about the files whose name is longer than user defined limit.

    Micon is a utility designed to only copy icons from one file or folder to another.
  • Semulov
    Semulov lists all mounted volumes in your menubar, categorized by type. Clicking on a volume menu will unmount/eject that volume. Semulov supports Growl unmount and mount notifications:

    This utility helps Mac users to track any folder, internal or external HD and USB flash drives in simple text files with a list of files inside the disk.
  • SpaceControl
    SpaceControl shows how much free space on your startup disk.
  • Super Get Info
    (commercial) Super Get Info is a file and folder info utility for Mac OS X. It offers a flexible, user-friendly alternative to the Finder's "Get Info" command, allowing you to easily change file type info and permissions, edit comments, and preview file contents.
  • Where is my Disk Space?
    (commercial) Where is my Disk Space? is a program for analysing disks and finding where your disk space is being used up.
