Low-Spec Hardware? Try these Desktop Environments
I have selected my pick of desktop environments that are excellent candidates for older hardware. They typically run well on low-spec machines, even a system with a Pentium II 266MHz CPU, a processor that is now 16 years old. All of the desktops are released under freely distributable licenses. If your Linux box feels sluggish in general use, try one of the desktops featured below. It may just save you from discarding a perfectly good machine.

RuneScape
RuneScape is a MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game). In RuneScape you can go exploring, or earn a living practising a craft such as cooking or crafting. Many of the characters in the game can give you quests to explore, each with different rewards. Read more

Now you can play Pacman with many friends on different Maps in a big Pacman Universe ;) JMaPacman is totally platform independent, written using Java 1.5 and the Java2D environment.

    an ASCII based arcade game similar to Donkey Kong
  • Miniball SE 2
    Miniball SE 2 is a game which is similar to breakout but in this game the ball has to be caught with four pads instead of one.
  • MissionX
    MissionX is a free open source multiplatform multilanguage 2d arcade shooting game. The game takes place in space where you take control of captain Mark's starship in his mission to defend earth from the macronian invasion.
  • MouseTrap
    MouseTrap is a challenging old-style puzzle game, involving you collecting fruit and avoiding the enemy red dots. The aim of the game is to eat as many of the white fruit pieces as you can possibly manage before dying. Your reaction times will tested to the limit!
  • Powermanja
    Powermanja is a Java port of the "powermanga" arcade game. It runs on all Java enabled systems. The game window can be zoomed to 320x200 or 640x400.
  • Rescue! Max
    Rescue! Max is a 2D space, real-time, action/strategy game in which you are in control of a ship that you fly around space, fighting enemies and making friends on your way.
  • Robombs
    Robombs is a free multiplayer LAN game in 3D inspired by Bomberman. It takes the basic concept of Bomberman and transfers it into the 3rd dimension. It is free, fun, easy to grasp and a nice addition to your next LAN-party. Read more

    Romeo is a Java-based M.A.M.E. (Multiple Machine Emulator) frontend. MAME is an emulator. It reproduces, more or less faithfully, the behavior of various arcade machines.
  • simpleJ
    simpleJ emulates a simplified computer on your PC: a retro-style video game console that lets you understand how a computer works and write your own video game programs.
  • smultroNET
    smultroNET is a multiplayer worm-tron-kinda game. The main mission is to surround stones (pixels) to achieve points and try to keep away the opponents from robbing your "treasure chambers".
  • Stone's Throw
    a 2D accurate physics clone of the arcade classic Arkanoid written in pure Java. It has support for a global high score list and a central store of level data
  • Titan Attacks
    The gameplay is heavily inspired by Space Invaders with upgradeable ship and weapons. "The Earth is under attack from evil aliens from Titan! Upgrade your ship with bounty money and drive back the Titans across the Solar System, and defeat them on their homeworld. That'll show 'em! "
  • TiWarriors
    an arcade style game based on the classical Asteroids. Two things differ from the original: energy control and multiplayer mode
