Low-Spec Hardware? Try these Desktop Environments
I have selected my pick of desktop environments that are excellent candidates for older hardware. They typically run well on low-spec machines, even a system with a Pentium II 266MHz CPU, a processor that is now 16 years old. All of the desktops are released under freely distributable licenses. If your Linux box feels sluggish in general use, try one of the desktops featured below. It may just save you from discarding a perfectly good machine.

  • a2ps
    "Anything" to PostScript converter. It is easier to install than enscript, which needed flex, which isn't installed on the Z. So far, tested only with text files. Other formats will probably not work
  • Addoc
    a commandline program that will add files to your Documents tab in Opie or Qtopia. If your shell supports wildcards, addoc can add multiple files at the same time (ie, "addoc *" will add all the files in the current directory)

  • Explorer
    a file browser and ftp client. Unfortunately the implantation of file transfer doesn't allow for very big files, but it gets the job done for smaller ones. When started with the -ftp command line option the second tab turns into a ftp client

    creates 4 ipk files in your Documents Directory, one for the libs, and one each for the three Hancom applications
  • HideCF
    HideCF is a simple tool to clean up your Zaurus Documents Tab.

    IRK provides an interface between the LIRC infrared remote driver and the Qtopia environment. It adds a plugin that interfaces the LIRC device to Qtopia.
  • JeodCreator
    JeodCreator is an ipk for Sharp Zaurus 5500 users to package Jeod into an ipk file so it can be stored on the desktop while Opie is being put on the Zaurus. After which Jeod can be re-installed.
